Rhubarb Bread

Rhubarb
May 3, 2017

I like to make quick breads for my kids to eat with their breakfast. One of the most popular is banana bread. I also shred and freeze zucchini in the fall for making zucchini bread throughout the winter. I don’t like to feel trapped with making the same breads over and over, so I set out to find something new.

I was quick specific in my searching because my rhubarb is starting to come up, and I wanted to use up some frozen rhubarb from last season.…

100% Whole Wheat Bread Recipe

April 5, 2017

I started making my own bread shortly after getting married almost 15 years ago. I started with store bought white flour and a bread machine. It was amazing! Later, I moved to store bought whole wheat flour. This was less than awesome. It just didn’t rise nice like it was supposed to. Even with wheat gluten added in, it was still basically a failure, so I stopped baking bread and just started buying 100% Whole Wheat bread from the store.…

DIY All Natural Extracts

March 15, 2017

I have been on a breakfast shake kick lately and have been using a lot of mint in the shakes. It doesn’t take very long to strip a small mint plant of all its leaves, though. I needed a way to make my mint last longer, so I decided to pick all of the leaves and make mint extract with them. This way, I can use a bit of the extract in my shakes and make the leaves last a lot longer!…

Amish Cough Syrup

Homestead Bootcamp
March 14, 2017

Our family has been fighting some germs over the past couple of weeks, and the coughing was getting to be a little much. It was time we brought out the big guns – Amish cough syrup.

I came across this recipe online about a year ago on The Milk Mans Wife blog. The tincture on the blog is referred to as Snake Juice.

The recipe calls for lemons, onions, honey, peppermint schnapps, and blackberry brandy.…

100% Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe

March 8, 2017

One of my all-time favorite foods is pizza. Since I am the one who cooks all of the food in my house, I decided that every Friday is pizza day. I like to have total control over what goes on my pizza because it makes it easier to please everyone who will be sharing it. I can put onions and mushrooms on my half and leave them off for those who want the boring half. One thing I NEVER do is make a plain cheese pizza.…

Bleach That You Can Bathe In (If You Really Wanted To)

Homemade Bleach
February 22, 2017

I have 3 kids, so light colored clothes don’t usually stay clean for all that long. And I have never liked or bought commercial bleach. It stinks. It can ruin clothes. And I have been known to spill and/or drop liquids from time to time, and spilled bleach is a bad idea.

Recently, my grandma complained that the kids white clothes looked a little grungy, so I decided to find a way to “bleach” their clothes without the bleach.…

2 Ingredient Homemade Laundry Detergent (or 3 if you really want)

February 16, 2017

I was given a recipe for home made laundry detergent several years ago that had both a powdered version and a liquid version. The liquid version took longer to make and more room to store, so in favor of speed and ease, I chose the powdered version.

The original recipe called for Borax, Super Washing Soda and Fels-Naptha soap. However, I found the Fels-Naptha undesirable because it seemed to put a coating on my clothes and my washing machine.…

Plumple Sauce

Along with all the many apple trees we have at our home we also have a plum tree that produced an abundant amount of plums. I turned some into jelly, canned some whole (probably won’t do that again), froze some, and made plum-applesauce (known in my house as plumple-sauce). I will share the recipe that I used to make our first batch. You will probably want to reduce the amount of water you use only because ours is a little runny.…

Homemade Coconut Oil Aftershave Lotion

I hate shaving my legs. It isn’t fun, takes time when I could be doing something else, and leaves my legs dried out. I know that if I did a quick shave in the shower every day it wouldn’t seem that bad…but I don’t. Let’s face it, there are some things that are just never going to happen. So instead of changing how and when I shave, I just decided to make some homemade lotion to use on my legs once they are smooth and hairless.…

Kale Chips

Garden Journal
August 5, 2016

I keep a very small garden (especially compared to my mom and sister) and I love peppers, so a large portion of my garden is dedicated to different pepper plants. Since I also love to write things down in my journal, I draw out my garden map before planting and fill it in as I plant to remember what goes where. This year, I also decided to track when I maintain and harvest from my garden.…
